Patriots Defeat Eagles in Preseason Matchup as Roster Battles Heat Up

The New England Patriots secured a comeback preseason victory against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night following a pair of joint practice sessions. Both franchises used the contest to evaluate key depth positions as roster cutdown deadlines approach across the league.

Philadelphia's backup offensive line established early dominance, paving the way for running back Will Shipley to record 56 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Shipley's performance solidified his position on the roster after a strong week of practice in pass protection and receiving.

The Eagles' quarterback situation highlighted contrasting performances between veteran Andy Dalton and second-year passer Tanner McKee. Dalton struggled by completing 3 of 10 passes for 44 yards, while McKee managed the offense efficiently, going 16 of 22 for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Philadelphia defensive lineman Ty Robinson recorded two sacks during the game, continuing a strong preseason trend. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio commented on Robinson's recent progress following his initial performance earlier in camp.

"Yeah, he came to life," said Vic Fangio, Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator. "He's been on life support since he's been here, but he came to life and hopefully that will continue."

Fangio also evaluated international roster additions Joshua Weru and Uar Bernard, referring to the African prospects as the team's "exchange dudes" after Weru logged a sack on Patriots quarterback Behren Morton.

On the New England side, Morton led a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter despite facing defensive pressure. Outside linebacker Amari Gainer led the Patriots' defense with three pressures, while cornerback Kindle Vildor provided coverage support with a pass breakup.

Patriots running backs Hassan Haskins and Lan Larison gained ground in the competition for the third running back spot, with Larison scoring a touchdown on a fourth-down conversion. Receiver Kyle Williams logged a long touchdown catch on a vertical route but caught just two of six targets.

Philadelphia will host an open practice on Tuesday before completing its preseason schedule against the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday.
