Newcastle Pursues Manchester City Midfielder Nico Gonzalez

Newcastle United is advancing in negotiations with Manchester City to secure the transfer of midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with discussions between both Premier League clubs entering their final stages as of August 24, 2026.

The Magpies are keen to submit a formal proposal to the 24-year-old Spaniard to bolster their central midfield following the exits of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur and Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal.

Gonzalez, who joined Manchester City from FC Porto for approximately £50 million in January 2025, has struggled for regular playing time at the Etihad Stadium, starting just 26 league games across his 18-month tenure.

Despite registering 41 appearances overall during the 2025-26 campaign, the former Barcelona youth product started only two Premier League matches after January, though City remain open to his departure amid their own squad overhaul.

Under new head coach Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle has already completed six summer signings, focusing heavily on youth integration alongside target additions to replace core midfield departures ahead of the transfer deadline.
