Dethroned Miss North Carolina USA Sues Pageant Over Defamation

Dethroned Miss North Carolina USA Brittany Boltinhouse filed a defamation lawsuit against the Miss USA Organization and state pageant operators on August 23, 2026, in Duplin County Superior Court, alleging they weaponized her conservative political views to strip her crown.

The lawsuit names Miss USA CEO Thom Brodeur, JKN Universe, and state pageant operator A Blaize Productions as defendants following Boltinhouse's removal from her title on August 5, 2026. The organization crowned first runner-up Myla Hadley as the replacement competitor for the national pageant.

Legal representatives for the 27-year-old native of Duplin County claim pageant officials attempted to coerce a fabricated confession regarding her social media presence and subsequently issued defamatory public statements.

"Brittany Boltinhouse was not merely stripped of a title. She was publicly branded with a scarlet letter, accused of some of the most despicable accusations that can be lodged against another person in modern society," said Patrick M. Mincey, legal counsel for Boltinhouse.

Mincey stated that the defendants manufactured a false narrative to target the titleholder after she refused to sign a drafted public apology.

"The evidence will show defendants attempted to manufacture Brittany’s false confession and, when they failed to coerce one from her, proceeded to lie in order to gin up an online mob bent on destroying a talented young woman," said Mincey.

The filed complaint references recorded phone calls and internal conversations where pageant organizers allegedly acknowledged that the decision stemmed from public reactions to her political posts, which included support for political figures and past social media content from 2017 and 2019.

"While defendants enjoy a certain level of discretion to crown and remove titleholders, they cannot remove a titleholder for political reasons and then defame that titleholder to the public to hide their true motivations," said Stephen Bell, legal counsel for Boltinhouse.

Court filings highlight that the public narrative generated severe reputational damage to Boltinhouse's personal standing and career opportunities across global platforms.

"When these Defendants sicced an online mob on a young woman, they knowingly ensured her excruciating reputational destruction," stated the lawsuit.

The legal complaint asserts that the resulting publicity fundamentally damaged Boltinhouse's professional and personal livelihood.

"Defendants’ coordinated publications generated devastating media coverage and instantly transformed Brittany’s public identity from the newly crowned Miss North Carolina USA into the target of widespread accusations of racism, homophobia, transphobia, and bigotry. Those accusations remain associated with Brittany’s name across the world," stated the lawsuit.

The court document also alleges that the national organization actively coordinated to spread damaging characterizations without supporting evidence.

"Defendants’ coordinated statements evidence a conspiracy to gratuitously, maliciously, wantonly, knowingly and intentionally set about to defame Brittany as a racist, homophone and transphobe in the absence of any supporting evidence," stated the lawsuit.

The lawsuit detailed the severe personal impact experienced by the former titleholder following the organization's public actions.

"As a direct and proximate result of Defendants’ conduct and the foreseeable adverse coverage it generated, Brittany has suffered and continues to suffer substantial injury to her name, reputation, her businesses, standing in the community, personal and professional relationships, career, livelihood, and future economic opportunities. ...," stated the lawsuit.

The filing outlines additional emotional and financial distress incurred during the dispute.

"Brittany has further suffered humiliation, embarrassment, mental anguish, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, and the burden and expense of investigating, monitoring, responding to, and attempting to mitigate the false narrative and adverse coverage generated by Defendants," stated the lawsuit.

Pageant officials maintained that the removal followed a standard evaluation process regarding participant conduct and organization standards.

"This has nothing to do with you not having the freedom to say these things. It's just that saying those things don't align with the organization," said Nic Blaize, co-director for A Blaize Productions.

Blaize stated during recorded discussions that the accumulated public reaction and past online posts contributed to the organization's ultimate decision.

"Brittany, you are being dethroned, or you have been dethroned because of the totality of every single thing altogether. That's why our statement says, after review of multiple things, it's multiple things. It's not one thing, and it certainly has nothing to do with who you politically support ...," said Blaize.

Blaize clarified the official stance regarding the titleholder's online activity and personal beliefs during the recorded calls.

"This is not about your Christian beliefs. This is about defamatory things that you posted, and you said that were hurtful," said Blaize.

Boltinhouse is seeking compensatory and punitive damages for defamation and civil conspiracy, while the national pageant stream is scheduled to broadcast on Queen Beauty Network.
