Melinda French Gates Emphasizes Daily Self-Care in New Book
Philanthropist and former Gates Foundation co-chair Melinda French Gates has highlighted the critical role of daily self-care during personal transitions, drawing on lessons from her 2021 divorce from Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates and her early years of motherhood. Detailing her experiences in her 2025 book, The Next Day: Transitions, Change, and Moving Forward, French Gates advocates for brief periods of daily reflection to manage life disruptions and professional demands, according to reports by Forbes and The Economic Times. Addressing the habit of constantly rushing through major life events, French Gates emphasized the importance of allowing time to process emotional changes.
"Don't just leave and then jump to the next thing," said French Gates.
She noted that taking time immediately following a major shift provides space for meaningful personal development. "Take some time on the next day, the day after what you thought was the transition, to really think and feel and learn, because there's so much growth that can come in a transition," said French Gates.
French Gates noted that while unexpected changes disrupt long-term plans, they offer unique opportunities to reassess life directions. "When transitions come—and they will come—we need to be ready to spend a bit of time in the clearings in our lives they create," explained French Gates.
She added that these challenging periods force people to reevaluate their underlying assumptions and ambitions. "After all, transitions are disruptive and disorienting. They lay waste to all our careful planning and force us to question our assumptions, our ambitions, even our very identities.
But that, I've come to understand, is part of their magic," explained French Gates. To manage ongoing stress, French Gates recommends stepping away from digital devices for at least ten minutes each day to practice meditation, jogging, or quiet contemplation.
"I want to tell everyone to take time in quiet," said French Gates.
Her approach to personal wellness originated while raising three children, where she utilized early mornings and nap times for brief mental breaks to better manage family responsibilities. French Gates has donated over $600 million toward women's health while managing her philanthropic and business ventures. Her focus on individual balance mirrors broader corporate trends, as noted by the National Institute of Mental Health and executives like Crumbl cofounder Jason McGowan, who enforce Sunday closures to support employee wellbeing.
