Kevin Gausman Shines as Chicago Cubs Defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 7-0

Veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman delivered seven scoreless innings to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 7-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday at Chase Field in Phoenix, strengthening Chicago's position in the National League playoff race.

Gausman tied his season high with seven innings pitched, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out six batters. The 35-year-old right-hander relied heavily on his four-seam fastball, throwing it on 62 of his 94 pitches and registering a career-high 24 called strikes on the offering.

The victory, combined with a Philadelphia Phillies loss, expanded the Cubs' lead for the top National League Wild Card spot to three games. Chicago also gained half a game on the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central division, pulling within 5 1/2 games with 30 games remaining in the regular season.

Working alongside catcher Carson Kelly for just their second start as a tandem, Gausman kept Arizona's offense in check throughout the night. The Diamondbacks entered the contest ranking second in the National League in OPS during the month of August, but only managed to put one runner in scoring position when Corbin Carroll stole second base.

"I thought Carson called a hell of a game," Gausman said. "Being able to recognize them with two strikes, maybe looking for something soft, we blew some fastballs right by guys. It’s always nice when you have good enough command where you can throw that pitch a lot, and I kind of knew early on it was going to be there."

Cubs manager Craig Counsell highlighted the efficiency and placement of Gausman's primary pitch following the dominant outing.

"That’s the pitch that was definitely the difference maker," Counsell said. "It was that he commanded it really, really well. Carson did a great job of feeling they’re kind of maybe looking for the split and then the fastball gets taken."

The battery mates built quick chemistry prior to the start, establishing communication off the field to prepare for their assignments.

"If he’s eating, even if I’m not hungry, I just go grab something, go sit next to him," Kelly said. "Just a lot of conversations. Talk about the game, talk about life … that way we build that trust and then when we get out there, we trust each other."

Kelly praised Gausman's leadership and presence on the mound as the Cubs navigate their pitching rotation depth down the stretch.

"He’s a good energy guy," Kelly said. "The work ethic is there. He’s a true pro; he wants the ball – you can see that every inning. It just seems like he gets stronger and stronger."

Offensively, Chicago generated all five of its initial runs with two outs in the frame, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Michael Conforto and Kelly in the sixth inning. The Cubs lead Major League Baseball with 274 runs scored with two outs this season.

Gausman expressed confidence in the roster's collective balance following the shut-out performance.

"The sky is the limit," Gausman said. "This defense, this offense, the pitchers that we have here – it’s a really great team."

The performance comes as relief pitcher Jacob Webb continues his high-leverage role in the Cubs bullpen despite a walk-off loss to the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. Webb had completed a 24-game, 24 2/3-inning scoreless streak prior to allowing a game-ending home run to Randy Arozarena.

"Just some poor execution on my part," Webb said.

Left-hander David Peterson noted that Webb's overall body of work remains crucial to Chicago's pitching staff moving forward.

"He’s been unbelievable," Peterson said. "I think this might be the first little bump in the road for him since I’ve been here. It’s going to happen, but it doesn’t take away from how good of a pitcher he is, how good he’s been for this team, and how good and important he’s going to be going forward."

Reliever Daniel Palencia also praised Webb's performance during his stint filling in as the team's primary closer.

"Watching a guy like Webby," Palencia said, "it’s awesome."

Webb explained the sequence leading up to the final pitch in Seattle, where a slider remained high in the strike zone.

"I was trying to, honestly, bury it," Webb said, "trying to see if I could get a swing at it. I just left it up a little bit."

Counsell reaffirmed full confidence in Webb despite the late-game stumble against the Mariners.

"He’s been so, so good," Counsell said. "I think I’ve regularly stated he’s kind of held this whole thing together for most of the year. He’s been great.

I mean, he’s having a heck of a season. Today doesn’t change that. He’s going to be out there the next time there’s an opportunity."

Webb acknowledged the manager's backing as he prepares for his next relief assignment.

"It’s awesome having the confidence from him," Webb said. "I have the confidence in my ability, too. I think today I just, like I said, I just didn’t execute, and I got beat."

Webb holds a 2.33 ERA with 61 strikeouts over 54 innings pitched in his first season with Chicago after signing a one-year contract last offseason.
