Hulu Cancels Not Suitable for Work After One Season

Hulu canceled Mindy Kaling comedy series Not Suitable for Work after one season, ending the show’s run on the streamer. The cancellation followed its release of all nine episodes in June.

The series followed five work-obsessed twentysomethings pursuing professional success and, when they could, personal happiness while living in Manhattan’s glamorous Murray Hill neighborhood. Hulu’s decision ends the show after just the first season.

The cast included Ella Hunt, Avantika, Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay, and Jay Ellis, with recurring guests in the first season including Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Judy Gold, Ego Nwodim, Harry Richardson, Constance Wu, Laura Bell Bundy, May Hong, Bhavesh Patel, Emilia Suárez, and Michael Benjamin Washington.

According to TVLine, Not Suitable for Work was created by Mindy Kaling and executive-produced by Kaling and showrunner Charlie Grandy.

TVLine also reported that the series earned an average grade of B- from TVLine readers when it premiered in June. Variety was cited as the first outlet to report the cancellation.

ScreenRant reported that Warner Bros. TV, which produced the show, intends to shop it to possible new streaming homes. ScreenRant added that the show’s mixed critical reception was reflected in a 54% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it an 82% Popcornmeter score.

ScreenRant noted this was not the first Hulu sitcom canceled after one season in the past year, pointing to Mid-Century Modern, which was canceled after one season. All episodes of Not Suitable for Work are now streaming on Hulu.
