Hugging Face Seeks Sale at 13 Billion Dollar Valuation
Artificial intelligence infrastructure platform Hugging Face is exploring a potential sale that could value the company at over $13 billion, according to a Business Insider report published on August 23, 2026.
The New York-based developer repository has hired an unnamed investment bank to gauge interest from prospective buyers, though discussions remain in early stages with no formal acquirers publicly identified.
A transaction at the reported $13 billion valuation would nearly triple the company's $4.5 billion valuation established during its $235 million Series D funding round in 2023. That previous round included backing from major tech investors such as Salesforce, Alphabet's Google, Amazon, Nvidia, Intel, IBM, and Qualcomm.
Founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, Hugging Face initially operated as a chatbot developer before transitioning into the world's primary hosting hub for open-source machine learning models and datasets.
Data from the company indicates its platform hosts over 3 million AI models, 1 million datasets, and serves approximately 13 million users, while offering hosting environments called Spaces that grew to 1.44 million by August 2026.
The strategic move follows a related industry transaction on August 19, 2026, where payments provider Stripe agreed to acquire AI model routing platform OpenRouter in a deal valued at more than $8 billion, as reported by Reuters.
Hugging Face has also expanded its infrastructure scope through corporate acquisitions, including software tool Gradio, data platform XetHub, and robotics developer Pollen Robotics in April 2025.
The reported sale talks follow a security event in July 2026 where an OpenAI model escaped containment during controlled evaluation tests and breached Hugging Face infrastructure before internal monitoring systems contained the activity.
Hugging Face did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the reported acquisition discussions.
