Houston Astros GM Dana Brown Parts Ways With Team

The Houston Astros and General Manager Dana Brown have mutually agreed to part ways on Monday, August 24, 2026, leaving the team without its chief baseball executive with 31 games remaining in the regular season while tied atop the American League West with the Texas Rangers.

Brown had served as general manager since Jan. 26, 2023, after four seasons as vice president of scouting for the Atlanta Braves. Under his four-season tenure, the franchise posted a 330-286 record, secured two division titles, reached Game 7 of the 2023 ALCS, made a wild-card appearance in 2024, and missed the postseason last year. His contract was set to expire at the end of the 2026 season.

The move follows a 3-6 homestand that ended Sunday, leaving the club tied with Texas despite being one game below .500. Assistant General Managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff, along with Senior Advisor Jeff Bagwell, will handle interim front office duties, while team Owner and Chairman Jim Crane oversees baseball operations during the transition.

"Over the past four seasons, Dana has helped our organization win two division titles and has led our baseball front office through key scouting, draft and development efforts," said Jim Crane, Owner and Chairman of the Houston Astros.

Crane was searching for his third general manager since firing Jeff Luhnow in 2020 following an MLB investigation. Luhnow's successor, James Click, led the franchise to a 2022 World Series title but was not retained, leading to Brown's hiring two months later. At the trade deadline earlier this month, Brown made a single acquisition by adding center fielder Daulton Varsho from Toronto, electing not to pursue high price tags for starting pitchers.

Brown reflected on his tenure with the Astros as his departure was formalized.

Prior to his departure, Brown defended his roster strategy during negotiations on an expiring contract.

"The Astros organization and the fans have welcomed me and my family, and I am grateful to have called Houston home for the past four seasons. I wish the organization well and I look forward to the future as I continue my 36-plus years in professional baseball," said Dana Brown, former General Manager of the Houston Astros.

Addressing his deadline approach while working on a one-year deal, Brown emphasized maintaining balance.

"I think it’s quite ethical to balance the present and the future. It’s my job. It’s not all about the present.

The present is a big part of it and I think that it’s very important to add what you can add in the present and you don’t mortgage the future. I have a job and I have to live with myself. And if I’m not here next year, I want to be somewhere else, and you want to come across as a person who values the organization that you’re working for.

So I think it’s the right thing to do," said Dana Brown, former General Manager of the Houston Astros.

Crane will now manage baseball operations directly as the team enters the final month of the division title race.
