Harrison Butker Kicks 69-Yard Field Goal as Chiefs Fall to Buccaneers

Despite the historic distance, the kick will not enter the official NFL record books because it occurred during the preseason. The current official record remains 68 yards, set by Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little on November 2, 2025.

The spectacular make capped a dominant opening half for Butker, who also converted field goals from 45 and 58 yards out to give Kansas City a 9-0 halftime lead. However, his performance faltered in the second half when he missed a re-tried extra point and failed to convert a potential game-winning 43-yard attempt.

Addressing reporters after the game, the veteran kicker expressed disappointment with his late-game execution rather than highlighting his long-distance make.

"You've got to make your kicks. Miss an extra point, miss a game-winner. That's what I care about, not the 69-yarder or whatever it was," Butker said.

The kick highlights a broader trend in the NFL, where league rule adjustments—such as updated ball-handling procedures for kickers introduced in 2025—have contributed to a surge in long-range field goals across the league.

Reflecting on his career trends, Butker noted his ongoing focus on maintaining consistency throughout entire games.

"I feel like throughout my career when I've had big kicks, it's been a struggle to finish the game or the next game," Butker added.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid offered support for his veteran kicker following the contest, emphasizing Butker's long-term reliability despite the late miss.

"Butker, until the last field goal, had a heck of a day. But he'll be the first to tell you that's the one he'll remember," Reid said.

Tampa Bay rallied in the second half behind rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels, who led three scoring drives, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to Ko Kieft. The Chiefs conclude their preseason program against the Seattle Seahawks next Friday, while the Buccaneers travel to face the Jacksonville Jaguars.
