Global Ocean Temperatures Reach Unprecedented Record High
Global sea surface temperatures reached an all-time record high of 21.1 degrees Celsius on August 22, driven by relentless human-caused climate change and an intensifying El Nino weather pattern, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service.
The figure surpasses the previous record of 21.09 degrees Celsius established over several days in March 2024. Oceanographers noted that global ocean temperatures historically peak in March or April, making an August heat spike exceptionally rare and concerning.
Data gathered from satellites, ships, and buoys between 60 degrees south and 60 degrees north latitude showed that the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gas emissions is overwhelming marine systems. The oceans absorb over 90 percent of the planet's surplus heat.
"This record is another clear signal of an ocean under growing stress," said Dr. Samantha Burgess, deputy director of Copernicus.
Burgess highlighted that the current atmospheric conditions are compounding long-term trends.
"El Niño is adding heat to the system, but it is doing so on top of decades of human-driven warming," she added.
She also emphasized the growing pressure on ecosystems, stating that the number of marine heatwave days globally has more than tripled since the early 1990s.
The intensifying El Nino phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean is forecasted to peak between November and January. Scientists warn that the event could be the strongest recorded in centuries, threatening to push sea temperatures even higher through early 2027.
"All things being equal we might expect the ocean temperature record to be broken again in March [or] April 2027," said Dr. Jeremy Grist, senior research fellow at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton.
He noted that breaking records this early serves as an indicator of the event's trajectory.
"The fact that we are already breaking records is an early indicator of how strong the El Niño is becoming," Grist added.
Extreme marine warmth has extended far beyond the tropical Pacific, severely affecting European waters. The western English Channel has experienced continuous marine heatwave conditions for over three years, spiking up to 7 degrees Celsius above average.
“This is unprecedented,” said Prof. Tim Smyth, director of science at Plymouth Marine Laboratory.
Smyth warned that the data points toward long-term environmental shifts.
“The latest Copernicus data reinforce the troubling upward trend in ocean temperatures,” Smyth added.
Experts warn that warmer oceans hold less carbon dioxide, weakening a vital buffer against climate change. Additionally, thermal expansion raises sea levels while elevated sea surface temperatures supercharge atmospheric storms and destabilize global weather systems.
“An ocean this warm destabilises weather patterns and threatens food security, economic prosperity and marine life,” Jane Lubchenco, an oceanographer and former head of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told the Associated Press.
Lubchenco expressed strong concern over the trajectory of global marine warming.
“A warmer ocean is not our friend,” Lubchenco added.
Environmental organizations are calling for immediate international policy interventions to limit further damage to fragile marine ecosystems.
“Two key actions are needed to address this record ocean warming,” said Brian O’Donnell, director of Campaign for Nature.
O'Donnell stressed that international commitments must be enacted swiftly.
“Fossil fuel emissions need to be rapidly reduced. Meanwhile, it is essential that countries protect marine and coastal ecosystems. Kelp beds, mangroves and marshes absorb carbon and coral reefs protect against storms and provide habitat. More than 190 governments have committed to protect and conserve at least 30% of the planet by 2030, and now is the time to turn that commitment into effective, durable conservation on the ground,” O'Donnell said.
Climate system analysts project that global land temperatures will lag ocean anomalies by roughly three months, setting late 2026 and 2027 on course to break historical heat records worldwide.
“There is quite a big certainty that sea surface temperatures globally are now higher than even the last warm period before the last ice age,” Leon Simons, a climate systems analyst and executive director of the Club of Rome Netherlands, said during a webinar.
Researchers emphasized that long-term emissions remain the ultimate driver behind the persistent temperature gains.
“Although El Niño events often provide a temporary boost to global temperatures, these new global climate records are ultimately being driven by human-caused climate change,” Climate Central said in a press release.
Unusually warm waters off the North American coast are expected to alter regional precipitation patterns and enhance tropical cyclone activity throughout the fall.
“If this continues on the current trajectory, this is going to be an El Niño event that is without precedent,” said JP O’Brien, a climate scientist and program officer for science at the Heising-Simons Foundation.
O'Brien noted that even slight percentage increases in moisture levels can lead to heavy terrestrial flooding during winter storms.
“If you have 20 to 40 atmospheric rivers in a winter and each one is 1% to 2% wetter, that translates to a lot of extra water coming down on land,” O’Brien said.
