Severe Tornado Strikes Southern France Damaging 300 Homes and Injuring 41

A severe tornado hit the Aude department in southwestern France late on Monday, August 24, 2026, injuring 41 people and damaging roughly 300 homes across the region.

The extreme weather swept through the commune of Pomas, home to 1,000 residents, where peak winds reached up to 73 miles per hour (117 km/h) in nearby Arquettes-en-Val. Windows were shattered and roofs were torn off as the vortex swirled past the nearby village of Verzeille around 5:20 p.m.

Local authorities reported that 15 of the injured required hospitalization. Emergency crews mobilized rapidly to manage the aftermath, which included clearing debris, restoring infrastructure, and securing damaged structures.

"More than 120 firefighters are on the scene," stated the prefecture of the Aude department, adding that "operations to secure buildings are under way."

Among those hospitalized was a pregnant woman injured after her residence collapsed during the storm, her husband told AFP.

"More than 120 emergency workers were deployed to the scene," local authorities confirmed regarding the rescue operation.

The intense storm system triggered widespread infrastructure chaos throughout southern France, according to Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot, who noted train delays, road closures, and flight disruptions extending from Marseille, Nice, and Toulouse up to Paris. Furthermore, officials canceled the third stage of the Vuelta a Espana cycling race after a heavy hailstorm forced riders to seek cover, while 2,800 households across 10 villages remained without electricity by Monday evening.

The storm followed a severe summer heatwave and widespread wildfires that had previously displaced 330,000 people across France and Spain during the continent's driest year on record. While France experiences several dozen tornadoes annually, scientists from the World Weather Attribution group noted that human-caused warming has significantly increased the likelihood of extreme summer conditions in the region.
