Darline Graham Seeks Senate Nomination in South Carolina Primary Runoff

Darline Graham, appointed to fill her late brother Lindsey Graham's Senate seat, is competing in a South Carolina Republican primary runoff for a full term this November. She carries the endorsement of former President Donald Trump and faces conservative Representative Ralph Norman.

Graham was appointed less than 48 hours after her brother's sudden death from heart issues to complete the remaining six months of his term. She soon announced her run for a full six-year term, driven partly by her brother’s legacy but campaigning with a distinct approach.

Unlike Lindsey Graham, who was outgoing and a prominent Washington insider for over 31 years, Darline Graham is more reserved and presents herself as a populist outsider focused on social issues like working with the disabled and visually impaired. She admitted during a debate to limited knowledge on national security, a mistake noted during the campaign but defended by Trump as honesty.

President Trump has invested political capital in her campaign, reflecting his continuing but challenged influence in Republican primaries nationally. His endorsement aims to boost her in what has become a closer race than expected.

Darline has consistently referenced her brother’s legacy in public events and campaign materials, asserting she is ready to earn the Senate seat and not take it for granted.

Her opponent, Ralph Norman, a congressman since 2017 and recent gubernatorial candidate, emphasizes merit over heritage in seeking the nomination. He said, "Nobody’s entitled by birthright to this office," and used a sports analogy comparing political legacy to athletic recruitment to argue his case.

Norman and his supporters highlight that Darline Graham is not Lindsey Graham, pointing out the challenges she faces despite the famous name and presidential backing. They question whether her last name alone should grant her political advantage.

Trump’s endorsement power has seen setbacks recently, with several endorsed candidates losing primaries and gubernatorial races, suggesting limits to his sway among the party’s base even in states aligned with his movement.

The sibling relationship between Lindsey and Darline Graham has been a recurring theme in campaign narratives, highlighting their shared upbringing in a modest family setting and his protective role after their parents passed away. Lindsey Graham’s memoir recounts formative moments they shared, including teaching her to ride a bike and pushing for social change within their family business.
