Chicago Sky Bans Enes Kanter Freedom After Courtside Altercation

Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom has been barred from Wintrust Arena after getting into a courtside altercation with guard Natasha Cloud, Chicago Sky majority owner Michael Alter announced Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

The incident occurred in the third quarter of Chicago's loss to the Indiana Fever after Cloud scored and directed comments toward Freedom. Security and Sky players stepped between them before escorting Freedom out of the arena.

The exchange escalated after Cloud approached Freedom, who was seated near the basket, following a timeout call. Freedom was subsequently unable to return for the remainder of the contest.

Sky majority owner Michael Alter addressed beat writers regarding the decision to bar Freedom, citing safety and decorum concerns following the courtside dispute.

"He has demonstrated to us, unequivocally, that he has the potential to be a threat," said Sky owner Michael Alter.

Alter characterized the verbal interaction between the spectator and Cloud as a basketball-related provocation that exceeded acceptable standards.

"He began to chirp with her in the third quarter," said Sky owner Michael Alter.

When asked whether the venue ban could ever be lifted, Alter noted that the team might reconsider under specific conditions.

"As far as a lifetime ban, if someday he’s able to demonstrate he’s capable of being at a game and conducting himself in compliance with our rules and not be a threat to people, might we reconsider?" said Sky owner Michael Alter.

Alter noted that any change in status would depend on long-term adherence to arena rules.

"I suppose it’s possible," said Sky owner Michael Alter.

Alter added that he has not spoken with WNBA officials regarding potential league-wide bans at other arenas.

Freedom offered his account of the confrontation, stating that the exchange began after he cheered for Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham.

"Sophie Cunningham shot a three, and I put my hands up to celebrate," said Enes Kanter Freedom.

Freedom claimed that Cloud confronted him directly several possessions later during a stoppage in play.

"Literally, a couple possessions later, Natasha came back and started screaming and yelling and said, ‘She’s not gonna sleep with you.’" said Enes Kanter Freedom.

He stated that he stood up solely to clarify his supportive intent toward female athletes.

"And I was like, ‘I am not trying to sleep with her. I’m just here to protect women and support her.’ And then, obviously, after that she started yapping, and she started to walk towards me, and literally I just got up, and then I was like, ‘I’m just here to protect women, and that’s all.’" said Enes Kanter Freedom.

Freedom reiterated that his initial actions were strictly intended as gestures of support for a friend.

"I was cheering for my friend Sophie because when she shot that three, I put my hands in the air," said Enes Kanter Freedom.

Freedom expressed surprise at the sudden confrontation and suggested his shirt contributed to the argument.

"A couple possessions later, she came back and said, ‘She’s not gonna sleep with you.’ And I was shocked. I was like, ‘Listen, I’m not trying to sleep with her.

I think she’s awesome. She’s a good friend.’ But I think it has a lot to do with my shirt." said Enes Kanter Freedom.

The shirt worn courtside by Freedom displayed a dictionary definition regarding biological sex.

“WOMAN noun. adult human female,” read the text printed on the shirt Freedom wore during the game.

Freedom argued that the message on his attire caused the intense reaction from Cloud during the game.

"I was obviously wearing a shirt explaining what a woman is, and I think that had a lot to do with what she thinks about women. I think it triggered her a lot." said Enes Kanter Freedom.

Cloud did not speak during postgame press availability but posted a message supporting the transgender community on social media.

"To every trans kid/person, You are apart of MY community & tribe. You belong. You’re loved.

You’re seen. You’re perfect as you are. & you will always be protected by me," wrote Natasha Cloud, Chicago Sky guard.

Freedom, who faced protesting fans outside Wintrust Arena prior to tipoff, maintained that he still intends to pursue entering the WNBA Draft.
