Bill Gates Warns AI Threatens Global Security and Jobs

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates issued a stark warning on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, stating that artificial intelligence poses a grave threat to human life and employment, while urging world leaders to make mitigating its risks the top global priority.

Gates released a nearly 6,000-word essay detailing his concerns and outlining potential solutions, including international regulation regimes, new taxes, and model restrictions. He revealed plans to discuss global AI governance with Chinese President Xi Jinping during an upcoming visit tentatively scheduled for November 2026.

Addressing the underlying dynamics within the technology sector during an interview with The New York Times, Gates accused industry leaders of downplaying risks due to substantial financial incentives.

"In private, people who understand how good this stuff is, and how much better it’s getting, they’re very worried," said Bill Gates, Co-Founder of Microsoft.

Gates noted that tech leaders are actively suppressing public warnings to protect future capital investments.

Reflecting on personal experience, Gates recalled the specialized care given to his late father, who passed away from Alzheimer's disease six years ago.

"AI will require much, much more. It will affect national security as well as employment, education, taxation, energy, elections, air and water, public health, the financial system, law enforcement, transportation, public lands and IT systems," said Bill Gates, Co-Founder of Microsoft.

He questioned global institutional readiness to implement such comprehensive regulatory frameworks.
