Every candidate undergoes a culture interview designed to assess their commitment to the company's mission over personal financial gain. One applicant recalled being asked how they would feel if Anthropic halted its AI ambitions for safety reasons and its stock lost all value.

According to a former employee, these culture questions are flexible rather than scripted, leading to varied recollections among candidates. Some recall being asked about a stock crash scenario, while others remember discussions about safety and revenue trade-offs.

Candidates must also discuss moral dilemmas they have faced and their responses. One candidate shared they honestly expressed concerns about a wipeout but emphasized balancing doing good with ethical business practices, which reportedly did not impress the interviewer.

CEO Dario Amodei has voiced concerns that new hires may prioritize salary over the mission, despite the company paying near the top of the AI market. The industry sees high turnover, with key founders and researchers leaving for competitors.

Two former employees indicated the mission-focused stock question was introduced in 2025, though culture interviews have been part of Anthropic since its inception according to co-founder Daniela Amodei.
