Analysts Urge Caution on Top Running Backs Ahead of 2026 Drafts

Fantasy football analysts and ranking platforms issued warnings on several prominent running backs on August 26, 2026, advising managers to exercise caution at their current Average Draft Position due to workload concerns and backfield committees.

Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions tops the 2026 PPR running back consensus rankings ahead of Bijan Robinson and Christian McCaffrey. Despite high draft positions, several top-tier players present elevated risk profiles due to changing offensive systems, injury histories, and declining efficiency metrics.

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey enters his age-30 season following a heavy 2025 workload where he logged 450 total touches including the postseason. Analytical data shows McCaffrey experienced a significant drop in per-carry efficiency, finishing 48th in yards per carry, 42nd in explosive run rate, 43rd in rushing success rate, and 47th in yards after contact per attempt.

"McCaffrey's ceiling is as high as any player in fantasy, but it's hard to draft him with confidence given last year's workload, some signs of decline and his age," said Justin Boone, fantasy analyst at Yahoo Sports.

"If I pass on McCaffrey and he defies the odds with another big season, I'll survive since I still have a strong Round 1 pick on my team. But if I draft him at ADP knowing what we know and he fails to deliver, I'll never let myself forget it," Boone added.

The Houston Texans backfield presents another point of contention as David Montgomery joins a system that has struggled with rushing production. Houston ranks 31st in expected points added per carry and 22nd in rushing yards per game since 2023, while Montgomery's missed tackle rate dropped to 18 percent last season.

"Montgomery must overcome his career wear-and-tear along with an OL that's been horrific for the entirety of the C.J. Stroud era," said Hayden Winks, fantasy analyst at Yahoo Sports.

"Even if he is a workhorse for one more year, the Texans OL is starting an out-of-position rookie center and three potentially washed veterans," Winks said.

In Cleveland, Quinshon Judkins faces environmental headwinds with an offensive line rated among the league's worst, a team win projection of 5.5 games, and ongoing recovery from ankle surgery.

"When you draft a fantasy running back, you're drafting into the village that supports that running back," said Scott Pianowski, fantasy analyst at Yahoo Sports.

"Judkins is currently the RB22 in Yahoo ADP, a ticket I'm not interested in punching," Pianowski noted.

The Tennessee Titans are expected to implement a committee approach between Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears under head coach Brian Daboll. Pollard enters his age-29 season after three consecutive years exceeding 275 touches.

"Has there been enough positive change this offseason for him to break back into the top 20? No, quite the opposite I'd argue," said Joel Smyth, fantasy analyst at Yahoo Sports.

"There's a good chance Tennessee is consistently playing from behind while Pollard is unlikely to break past six TDs for the fourth straight year," Smyth added.

Denver Broncos tailback J.K. Dobbins saw heavy first- and second-down usage last season, but rookie RJ Harvey and Jonah Coleman are expected to take over passing-down and short-yardage roles.

"If we're adhering to the advice that 'volume is king,' then Dobbins already has a claim to the RB1 throne in Denver," said Chris Allen, fantasy analyst at Yahoo Sports.

"Simply put, Dobbins has fewer outs to meet his draft cost," Allen added.

Additional high-profile backs face crowded rotation setups across the league. The New England Patriots are expected to split touches between TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson, while the Jacksonville Jaguars intend to utilize a three-way rotation featuring Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez, and LeQuint Allen. Meanwhile, Travis Etienne joined the New Orleans Saints on a four-year, $47 million contract to split work with Alvin Kamara.
