Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso takes charge of his first official Premier League match as the Blues visit Craven Cottage to face Álvaro Arbeloa's Fulham on August 24, 2026, handing a start to record British signing Morgan Rogers.

The West London derby marks the debut of £117 million summer acquisition Rogers, who lines up in attack alongside Cole Palmer and João Pedro. New defender Maxence Lacroix also starts for Chelsea, while midfielder Enzo Fernández is named among the substitutes amid interest from Manchester City.

Addressing tactical expectations surrounding Rogers' transition from Aston Villa's direct system to Chelsea's approach, Alonso highlighted the need for tactical adaptability across his squad.

"When we need to have good control, I think Morgan can do it. Our game is whatever it takes. So when we have to do transition, we will do transition. All the rest of the players, they need to understand what it takes because this is to be competitive," Alonso said.

The Spaniard emphasized that rigid tactical systems remain secondary to maintaining team flexibility across different match scenarios.

"You have a plan, you have an idea, you have a style, but sometimes the game demands something different. Are you able to adapt to that and to be competitive in that momentum as well? If we are able to understand that and to do that, we will win more games," Alonso said.

Chelsea will utilize tactical fluidities tailored to specific opponents rather than committing to a permanent formation.

"We tend to, more than in one specific picture, to have principles when we are moving around the pitch. And those can be in one formation or a different formation. We have players who have enough flexibility to play in different ones. So that gives us possibilities to prepare with our own identity," Alonso said.

The manager also focused on maximizing the impact of 24-year-old playmaker Cole Palmer, who experienced a full pre-season following a quiet two-year period after his initial arrival in London.

"Different players need different connections and Cole, for sure, he's very analytical," Alonso said.

Alonso praised the midfielder's intelligence on the pitch while establishing a working rapport.

"I think that he's smart," Alonso said.

Giving the attacker freedom remains central to the coaching staff's approach.

"You need to give him his space to connect, but I'm really enjoying it because he's top-talented and with little, he understands a lot so it's been very interesting," Alonso said.

Regarding his defensive setup, Alonso acknowledged the prevailing tactical discussions regarding his use of a three-man backline, a system he previously used during an unbeaten domestic run at Bayer Leverkusen.

"Lots of teams play three at the back in certain parts of the game. You see each team has to be so sophisticated to prepare for each game and know what they're going to do because each team, they prepare so well," Alonso said.

Beyond structural arrangements, Alonso designated team unity as the central foundation for the club moving forward.

"But above the football qualities, above the tactics, for me it's the soul of the team, the team spirit. We are able to connect, to have this good energy that we share," Alonso said.

Building team cohesion remains an ongoing development for the squad.

"This is a process, it's not one day you create that, but we start feeling it and we start enjoying it. That will be for me the strongest force and strength of this team," Alonso said.

The Chelsea manager expects continuous progression through regular match competition.

"When you focus on one thing, you tend to improve those things. When you don't focus that much, maybe those things are not important. But for me, this is very important. This is a process, it takes time, but I'm sure that what we started will get better with the games," Alonso said.

Separately, Alonso declared Palmer to be operating at the highest level following his dedicated summer training program at Cobham.

"Cole is determined to enjoy his football," Alonso said.

The manager noted Palmer's physical readiness ahead of the campaign opening match.

"He wants to be fit. He wants to feel healthy. He wants to have a good connection with the players around him. And I've said that if we have this Cole and we are able to reach him and he feels that flow in the game and that he connects well with the players, I'm sure that his level is top-class, world-class I would say, and that he will have a great season," Alonso said.

Alonso confirmed that Palmer's previous injury setbacks are fully managed following proactive physical conditioning work.

"Yes. I think that sometimes you need to go through a difficult moment with an injury or whatever to learn from that," Alonso said.

The player's current preventative regime aims to safeguard his availability throughout the campaign.

"I think that Cole has gone through a difficult period with the injury, and now he's working really hard to have the prevention not to have to feel those symptoms," Alonso said.

Palmer has maintained this workload since the squad reconvened.

"Since the first day, he's been working really hard to avoid that," Alonso said.

Chelsea's starting lineup for the encounter features Robert Sánchez in goal behind Josh Acheampong, Lacroix, Levi Colwill, Malo Gusto, and Jorell Hato, with Romeo Lavia and Reece James supporting Palmer, Rogers, and João Pedro.
