USS Abraham Lincoln to dock in Thailand after Middle East deployment

The USS Abraham Lincoln is set to dock in Thailand next week after a record deployment in the Middle East, as Canada and the United States move deeper into a tariff dispute, Canadian PM Mark Carney said. The dispute follows Trump tariff threats and Canada’s planned retaliation.

Carney said on Monday that while American negotiators cited Canada’s use of French in the country as an irritant, he argued that it reflects rights in Quebec.

Carney instructed negotiators to walk away from trade talks last week, after tariffs on Canadian products took effect over the weekend and affected around 5% of Canada’s exports to the US.

Canada said it will retaliate in early September, following the weekend tariff implementation and Trump’s escalation threats.

Quebec premier Christine Fréchette said Carney made the right decision in leaving talks that she described as crossing a red line for Francophones.

Trump posted on social media that Canada had been "ripping off the United States of America for years" and threatened a new round of economically damaging tariffs on cars and trucks, days after praise from political leaders for rejecting a US trade proposal.

In a separate account, Trump also directed his ire at automakers, telling Ford to "Drop Dead" as he threatened 50% tariffs on autos and auto parts.

Carney’s remarks came as Trump escalated his stance, writing that "On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50%."

US trade representative Jamieson Greer denied reports that French language protections were up for debate, saying, "That is not true." Greer added, "I like the Quebecois and I like that they speak French."
