4A Games Unveils Darker Metro 2039 Gameplay at Gamescom
Ukrainian studio 4A Games showcased a new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 during Gamescom, highlighting tense combat, weapon customization, and atmospheric mechanics as the team continues development amid the war in Ukraine. The upcoming sequel follows a protagonist known as The Wanderer across post-apocalyptic underground metro routes and hazardous surface areas. Gameplay elements featured in the reveal include using a blowtorch to slice through sealed doors, discovering environmental blueprints, and fighting aggressive surface mutants alongside hostile human factions. The narrative explores factional conflict involving the Novoreich and mysterious interactions with the Dark Ones, marking the series' fourth main entry eight years after 2019's Metro Exodus.
During a stage appearance alongside host Geoff Keighley, executive producer Jon Bloch reflected on the developmental shift driven by real-world events.
"Metro has always been a story about preventing a war, but now that war is at our doorstep, we have created a story about its consequences and what it takes to survive, the cost of silence, the horror of tirany and the price for freedom," said Jon Bloch, Executive Producer at 4A Games. The game balances intense stealth and action sequences, presenting a darker tone focused on human survival against catastrophic odds.
"what they protect, what they sacrifice and what remains of them when the world takes almost everything away," said Pavel Ulmer, Co-Creative Director and Audio Lead at 4A Games. Development is tailored to engage long-time series veterans while remaining accessible to newcomers who join the community.
"Your support and love have stayed with us every step of development," said Pavel Ulmer, Co-Creative Director and Audio Lead at 4A Games. Metro 2039 is scheduled to launch in February 2027 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
