William Lawrence Faces Scrutiny Over Past Arrest in House Race

Progressive Democratic candidate William Lawrence is facing renewed scrutiny in Michigan's pivotal congressional race against Republican Representative Tom Barrett after details of his 2013 arrest during a pipeline protest resurfaced.

Lawrence, a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, is running in one of the nation's most closely watched House elections that could determine party control of Congress.

Documents obtained by Fox News Digital show Lawrence was arrested in 2013 while demonstrating against the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline, a 645-mile piece of infrastructure running crude oil and natural gas through Michigan.

Demonstrators chained themselves to heavy equipment during the protest, leading law enforcement to charge Lawrence and three others with trespassing alongside resisting and obstructing a police officer after cutting them from the machinery.

Addressing the incident on Instagram earlier this year, Lawrence acknowledged taking a stand against Enbridge, calling the action righteous but questioning whether it was wise after facing legal consequences for years.

"Was it righteous? Absolutely. Was it wise? Perhaps not," said William Lawrence, Democratic Congressional Candidate.

He noted that the energy company resumed operations that afternoon while he and his collaborators faced long-term legal ramifications.

"The fact is, they were back operating that afternoon, while my collaborators and I faced legal consequences for years," said William Lawrence, Democratic Congressional Candidate.

Lawrence added that while he would not advise others to take similar actions, he remains committed to environmental advocacy.

"I wouldn't advise you do what I did, but my conviction remains, and you can always count on me to fight for pure Michigan and our water," said William Lawrence, Democratic Congressional Candidate.

Campaign officials confirmed the conviction was later expunged under Michigan state law.

The candidate has also addressed past social media posts from 2020 calling to defund the police, including specific comments directed at law enforcement in Lansing, Michigan.

In a statement this weekend, Lawrence stated he does not support defunding the police and emphasized collaboration with local law enforcement and first responders.

"I don't support defunding the police. I follow the lead of first responders and gun violence prevention advocates I have met with here in the district, who support increased funding for youth programs, mental health resources, and community violence intervention, working in collaboration with law enforcement," said William Lawrence, Democratic Congressional Candidate.

Political opponents have utilized his history to frame his campaign as out of touch with local voters.

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Zach Bannon criticized Lawrence's platform, characterizing him as an extreme candidate who prioritizes a radical climate agenda over local residents.

"Socialist felon William Lawrence is a radical far-left liberal who puts his extreme climate agenda ahead of common sense and the priorities of hardworking Michiganders. Lawrence's extreme agenda makes one thing clear: he is far too radical for Mid-Michigan and can't be trusted to put Michigan families first," said Zach Bannon, Spokesman, NRCC.

Bannon also highlighted Lawrence's previous ties to progressive political groups in the district.

"Socialist William Lawrence is a far-left liberal who helped start and spread the radical Democrat Socialists of America agenda. William Lawrence continues to prove he is too extreme for Mid-Michigan," said Zach Bannon, Spokesman, NRCC.

Lawrence, who hosted an early Democratic Socialists of America meeting at his home, recently confirmed he left the organization as the general election campaign intensified.

The primary saw Lawrence secure the Democratic nomination after defeating establishment-backed contenders Matt Maasdam and Bridget Brink, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine.
