Volkswagen Unveils New Tukan Pickup Truck in Brazil

Volkswagen presented its all-new Tukan compact pickup truck without camouflage at the Barretos Rodeo Festival in São Paulo state, Brazil, introducing the unibody model as the official successor to the long-running Saveiro.

Developed and engineered in Brazil with 76 percent locally sourced components, the Tukan will be manufactured at Volkswagen's São José dos Pinhais plant in Paraná. Official market deliveries across South America are scheduled to begin during the first half of 2027, positioning the vehicle to compete directly against light commercial rivals such as the Fiat Strada and Chevrolet Montana.

The Tukan marks the first production pickup built on Volkswagen's flexible MQB architecture, modified specifically with a heavy-duty rear leaf-spring suspension to maximize cargo payload capacity. Prototype testing for the vehicle covered more than two million kilometers, incorporating direct customer feedback that led to targeted refinements in the air intake and climate control systems.

Volkswagen confirmed that the Tukan lineup will feature both two-door single-cab and four-door double-cab body configurations. The entry-level single-cab variant, shown in work-focused Robust trim, prioritizes bed space with unpainted bumpers. The flagship double-cab model, displayed in Canary Yellow Extreme trim, targets lifestyle buyers with dark alloy wheels, full LED lighting, and an integrated sports bar.

Powertrain options are expected to span naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engines for fleet configurations, 1.0-liter turbocharged flex-fuel engines with automatic transmissions for mid-range trims, and a top-tier 1.5-liter TSI Evo2 engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The vehicle forms part of Volkswagen's broader 20 billion real investment strategy in South America, which encompasses 21 new regional model launches through 2028.

The introduction of the Tukan signals the upcoming retirement of the Saveiro after more than four decades of continuous production in Brazil since its 1982 debut. Production of the outgoing Saveiro is scheduled to conclude in the fourth quarter of 2026 to free up assembly capacity at the Paraná facility.
