Vanguard to Acquire AI Custody Platform Altruist
Asset management giant Vanguard announced an agreement on August 26, 2026, to acquire Altruist, an artificial intelligence custody and wealth technology platform catering to independent financial advisors. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The agreement brings one of the fastest-growing registered investment advisor custodians under Vanguard's ownership. The transaction is scheduled to close later in 2026, pending customary closing conditions and required regulatory approvals.
Altruist will operate as a standalone business unit under Vanguard, retaining its current leadership, brand name, advisor focus, and distinct operational structure. The deal expands on a relationship established in 2020 when Vanguard made an initial minority investment in the platform to bolster competition in the custody market.
Addressing the industry landscape, Vanguard chief executive Salim Ramji highlighted capacity constraints facing modern financial guidance.
"Technology can help close that gap by enabling advisors to serve more people and serve them better, while preserving the human judgment and relationships at the center of good financial advice," said Salim Ramji, Chief Executive of Vanguard.
As a self-clearing brokerage firm regulated by the SEC and FINRA, Altruist directly holds and settles client assets for more than 6,000 advisors. Its built-in software suite includes fractional-share trading, automated rebalancing, tax-loss harvesting, and an artificial intelligence tool called Hazel designed to generate client plans.
Founder Jason Wenk expressed confidence that the corporate backing would accelerate the platform's long-term growth trajectory.
"Vanguard's resources would let Altruist pursue its mission with greater speed and reach," said Jason Wenk, Founder and Chief Executive of Altruist.
The transaction remains subject to regulatory review before final execution later in 2026.
