US Treasury Department Announces Major Sanctions and Bond Market Actions

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was scheduled to hold a press conference on August 24, 2026, at 2 p.m. ET to unveil unprecedented economic sanctions against Iran while addressing escalating bond market pressures and trade tensions.

The announcement follows a series of policy moves aimed at stabilizing long-dated Treasury bonds and enforcing strict trade measures, even as broader market volatility persists across fixed income and currency markets.

The Treasury Department recently announced plans to double its bond buybacks for longer-dated maturities to $4 billion, funding the purchases through short-term bill issuances. The measure was designed to counter soaring yields after total US national debt exceeded $40 trillion and the July budget deficit reached $432.3 billion, marking the highest monthly deficit since March 2021.

Market analysts note that structural fiscal pressures, including massive corporate debt issuance, continue to overshadow short-term liquidity injections. Initial yield pullbacks following the intervention were largely reversed by the end of last week.

Geopolitical tensions further complicate the market backdrop as the administration targets Iranian financial flows and trade routes. In response to the upcoming sanctions package, Iranian officials threatened to disrupt oil exports from the Persian Gulf, raising concerns over global energy supply stability.

Simultaneously, trade negotiations between the US and Canada collapsed after disagreements over proposed text agreements. The standoff resulted in 50% US tariffs applied to approximately $20 billion in Canadian imports, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to pledge dollar-for-dollar retaliatory duties by early September.

Investors are also positioning ahead of economic data releases scheduled later in the week, including the July US PCE price index, second-estimate Q2 GDP figures, and corporate earnings from major technology firms. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is set to deliver his first keynote address at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium on Friday.
