US Public Debt Surpasses 40 Trillion Dollars Record High

Total US public debt surpassed $40 trillion for the first time on August 20, 2026, driven by persistent federal budget deficits and high interest payments. The milestone reflects a roughly one-third increase in national borrowing over less than five years.

According to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the national debt adds nearly $7 billion each day. The figure represents roughly double the national debt recorded ten years ago in August 2016, which stood just under $20 trillion.

Based on US Census Bureau population data of 343 million people, the overall balance translates to approximately $117,000 per American citizen.

Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, cautioned that continuous federal spending creates broader risk across the economy.

"Unsustainable borrowing on this scale has huge repercussions throughout the economy, straining efforts to address affordability and risking a dangerous debt spiral if lawmakers don’t act," said Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that second-quarter US gross domestic product reached over $32 trillion. The current national debt exceeds overall domestic output, placing the US debt-to-GDP ratio at approximately 123%.

International Monetary Fund statistics rank the US among the top ten highest debt-to-GDP ratios globally, behind nations including Japan, Singapore, and Italy. Data from the World Bank indicates the $40 trillion obligation also exceeds the combined $37 trillion GDP of the next five largest economies: China, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and India.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York figures show total US household borrowing, including mortgages and auto loans, stood at nearly $19 trillion in the second quarter, while overall credit card debt hit $1.26 trillion.
