US Cyclospora Cases Exceed 17000 as Outbreak Investigations Continue
U.S. health agencies have tracked more than 17,180 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis acquired domestically since May 1, 2026, as officials investigate multiple parasitic foodborne illness clusters nationwide, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data updated August 24.
The nationwide surge represents a drastic spike compared to the same period in 2025, when the federal agency recorded 1,180 cases. Public health officials noted that the actual number of illnesses is likely much higher due to reporting delays and infected individuals who recover without seeking medical testing.
A massive multistate outbreak linked to imported processed iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms has driven a significant portion of this year's total infections. The foodborne parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis causes severe intestinal illness, marked primarily by watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, and fatigue.
In addition to the primary lettuce-related outbreak, public health investigators at the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration are tracking at least six other active Cyclospora clusters where specific food sources remain unconfirmed.
In Kansas, state health officials reported 829 total cyclosporiasis cases as of August 26, reflecting a 22-case increase over the prior week. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has recorded 36 hospitalizations and zero deaths across the state, with Shawnee County logging the highest local total at 114 cases.
Recent surveillance indicates that while national case counts remain historically elevated, the overall rate of new diagnoses has begun to slow down toward the end of August. Epidemiologists note that the seasonal window for domestic Cyclospora transmission typically spans from May 1 through August 31.
Federal health guidance advises anyone experiencing sudden or prolonged gastrointestinal illness to consult a healthcare provider, as cyclosporiasis can be effectively treated using targeted combination antibiotics.
