Ukraine Marks 35th Independence Day Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukraine celebrated its 35th Independence Day on August 24, 2026, in Kyiv with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reaffirming the country's resolve to resist Russian aggression. Foreign dignitaries including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and European Council President Antonio Costa joined the commemorative event outside St. Sofia cathedral.

Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia continues to shape the nation's trajectory. Since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, hundreds of thousands have died, and vast territories have been devastated, as fighting persists along a 750-mile front line.

President Zelenskiy emphasized Ukraine's desire for peace but made clear the country would not surrender territory under pressure. He said, "Ukraine absolutely wants peace, but it is not ready to simply surrender." He rejected Russia's demands for ceding the remaining part of the eastern Donbas area.

Wearing traditional Ukrainian attire, Zelenskiy acknowledged international support and highlighted Ukraine’s defense advancements, including strikes deep inside Russia using drones and long-range missiles. He urged the acceleration of missile production to support winter operations.

Prime Minister Burnham announced UK support to boost Ukraine's domestic production of long-range missiles and planned to co-chair a virtual meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing" with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss further military aid, particularly air defense systems.

Burnham stated the UK would permit classified technology to help Ukraine produce European SCALP cruise missiles. The Kremlin responded by warning this would "add fuel to the fire" and cautioned London about potential consequences for supplying drones.

Ukraine has also intensified long-range strikes targeting Russian logistics and infrastructure, including recent drone attacks on four logistics hubs in southern Russia.

Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, chaired a global online meeting of Ukrainian youth organizations from over 35 countries ahead of Independence Day. He called on young Ukrainians worldwide to unite and show solidarity through local initiatives and events.

Budanov said, "Our strength lies in our unity and our ability to act together." The Coordination Center for Ukrainian Youth Abroad, established earlier this year, aims to maintain communication and coordinate efforts among youth across continents.

Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Olena Kovalska noted, "We are no longer talking about individual organizations, but about a network of Ukrainian youth capable of coordinating and acting together." The Center plans regional meetings to address challenges and develop solutions with government and international partners.

On Independence Day evening, Ukrainians and supporters worldwide will participate in a global "Chain of Unity" campaign to reinforce solidarity with Ukraine.
