Trump Suggests Renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America Amid Trade Row

President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, that the United States is considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" amid escalating trade disputes between the two neighboring nations. The statement came through a social media post on Truth Social on Tuesday morning following heightened economic friction over automotive tariffs and energy supplies. "The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer," President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social.

The diplomatic strain worsened after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the U.S. administration of attempting to destroy major Canadian industries, including autos, steel, and aluminum.
