Sports Illustrated Ranks Top Must-Watch College Football Teams

Sports Illustrated released its 2026 college football watchability rankings on August 25, 2026, evaluating 138 FBS programs across metrics including star power, drama, tradition, and unpredictability.

Former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin tops the watchability narrative following his winter departure to Baton Rouge to lead LSU. Kiffin heavily utilized the transfer portal to build a highly talented roster ahead of a scheduled return match at Oxford on Sept. 19, according to Sports Illustrated.

Ohio State holds the second ranking behind receiver Jeremiah Smith and quarterback Julian Sayin, alongside head coach Ryan Day's push for a top conference spot. Ole Miss ranks third under new head coach Pete Golding, led by quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy following a 362-yard passing performance in last season's Sugar Bowl win over Georgia.

Defending national champion Indiana secures the fourth position as head coach Curt Cignetti brought in transfer portal additions quarterback Josh Hoover and receiver Nick Marsh. Miami follows at fifth after a national title game appearance, featuring former Duke quarterback Darian Mensah and receiver Malachi Toney.

Notre Dame claims the sixth spot, featuring Heisman Trophy contender CJ Carr and a scheduled marquee home matchup against Miami on Nov. 7. Texas ranks seventh with quarterback Arch Manning leading the offense alongside transfer portal additions Cam Coleman and Hollywood Smothers.

Oregon takes the eighth position under head coach Dan Lanning and returning quarterback Dante Moore. USC rounds out the top tier in Year 5 under head coach Lincoln Riley, powered by quarterback Jayden Maiava, who recorded 3,711 passing yards and 24 touchdowns last season.
