San Diego police fatally shot a man Tuesday evening during a response to a residential burglary in the Point Loma neighborhood near Nipoma Street.

The incident began around 4:40 p.m. when officers were initially dispatched for a welfare check, which was later confirmed as a burglary in progress at the home. The homeowner informed police that firearms were inside and that no one had permission to be there.

Due to the threat level, the San Diego Police Department's SWAT team was called to handle the situation with tactical methods, according to the department.

While officers attempted to make contact, gunshots were heard from inside the residence. At approximately 9:20 p.m., a man exited the home holding a firearm. Officers then shot the man, who was struck and later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

No officers sustained injuries during the incident, the San Diego Police Department confirmed.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has taken over the investigation, as per the countywide agreement to prevent conflicts of interest in cases involving San Diego police personnel.

"Once the Homicide Unit concludes its investigation, the case will be submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether the involved officers bear any criminal liability. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the officers’ discharge of their firearm," the police department said in a statement.

Authorities have not yet identified the man involved or clarified what led to the shooting.

"Due to the potential dangers of the situation, the San Diego Police Department SWAT Team responded and employed tactical methods to safely resolve the incident," said the police department.

"During the incident, multiple gunshots were heard inside the home, and after 9 p.m., a man holding a firearm exited the home. At that point, a shooting involving officers occurred, and the man was struck," the San Diego County Sheriff's Office reported.

Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
