Police Search for Driver in Fatal Greenwich Village Hit-and-Run

New York City police officers are searching for the driver who fatally struck 22-year-old pedestrian Destiny Murrell in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, early Sunday morning before fleeing the scene.

Authorities reported that the Brooklyn resident was crossing in a crosswalk near Sixth Avenue and West Washington Place around 5:00 a.m. when a gray vehicle, possibly an SUV, hit her. The driver subsequently fled northbound on Sixth Avenue and turned onto Waverly Place without stopping.

Emergency medical services rushed Murrell to a local hospital, where medical staff pronounced her dead. Police have not yet identified or arrested the driver as the investigation remains ongoing.

Witness Corey Schwartz described the immediate aftermath of the collision after hearing screams from a group of people nearby.

"All of a sudden, we saw a group of people screaming, and I saw the girl laying on the floor right here. So I immediately ran over and checked her pulse. She had a pulse, and shortly thereafter, the police came and then the ambulance," witness Corey Schwartz said. "She was scratched up, almost like she had gotten dragged."

Schwartz noted that a group of about five individuals was with Murrell during the incident, appearing visibly shaken by the crash.

"About five people, they were hysterical," he said. "They must have seen her get hit."

In a separate incident earlier in the week, the NYPD reported that a BMW driver struck and killed a 51-year-old male cyclist before colliding with multiple parked cars on Bruckner Boulevard in the Bronx on Tuesday night. The driver in that crash fled on foot and remains at large.
