North Texas Endures Record Heat and Wildfire Threat This Week

North Texas is experiencing record-breaking heat this week, with temperatures reaching up to 109 degrees and an ongoing wildfire threat impacting the region west of I-35, according to weather officials.

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport recorded highs of 109 degrees on Sunday and Monday, surpassing previous records set in 2023 and 2010, as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS).

Temperatures are expected to remain dangerously high, with Tuesday forecasted to reach up to 109 degrees and DFW predicted to hit 105 degrees. An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for the area through Monday evening, with heat index values reaching as high as 114 degrees in some places, the NWS said.

Officials are urging residents to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, typically from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., and to stay hydrated and cool indoors as much as possible.

The heat is accompanied by gusty winds from the southwest reaching up to 20 mph, which are increasing the risk of grass fires particularly to the west of I-35, according to CBS News. Residents are advised to avoid activities that could ignite fires.

A brief chance of showers and storms may occur Tuesday morning due to a shortwave moving through the region, though most areas will remain dry. Eastern counties could see rain until early afternoon, potentially easing some heat temporarily.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service reiterated the extreme heat conditions, cautioning the public about the elevated fire danger caused by dry weather, low humidity, and light winds. They noted these factors have contributed to an ongoing wildfire threat across North Texas.

A weak cold front is expected to move southward into North Texas on Wednesday, potentially bringing a few scattered showers through Thursday morning. This front could cause afternoon temperatures to drop a few degrees, offering some relief after several days of intense heat.

According to Fox4 News, the ridge of high pressure responsible for the heat is expected to shift eastward by the weekend, continuing to maintain temperatures in the triple digits despite increased cloud cover and low rain chances.
