National Hurricane Center Tracks Two Atlantic Tropical Disturbances

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are monitoring two tropical disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean on August 25, 2026, as system activity ramps up toward the peak of the hurricane season.

Meteorologists designated the primary system near Africa as Invest 96L, while tracking a secondary disturbance east of Bermuda known as Invest 95L. Officials report Invest 96L carries high development odds over the coming days, potentially forming Tropical Storm Dolly as it shifts westward.

Environmental conditions across the central Atlantic remain favorable for Invest 96L to become a tropical depression within forty-eight hours. However, weather experts note that El Niño-driven upper-level wind shear and dry atmospheric air could disrupt further intensification over the weekend as the wave approaches the Lesser Antilles.

"Many of the computer simulations that show it surviving its encounter with the dust and hostile upper winds predict it will turn into a hurricane as it heads north of the Caribbean," said Bryan Norcross, FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist.

"That wouldn't be until next week, so it's nothing to think too hard about at this point," Norcross said.

Concurrently, Invest 95L continues steering north at 15 to 20 mph, with a narrow window to form a short-lived tropical depression before encountering hostile conditions and merging with a cold front by Wednesday. Weather service forecasts indicate Invest 95L may generate gusty winds and elevated rainfall across portions of Newfoundland, Canada, while neither system poses an immediate threat to the United States mainland.
