Motagua Advances to Quarterfinals After Draw with Municipal in Guatemala

FC Motagua secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Concacaf Central American Cup following a 1-1 draw against CSD Municipal at Estadio Manuel Felipe Carrera in Guatemala City on Tuesday.

The Honduran club ended the group stage with eight points from two wins and two draws, scoring eight goals and conceding two, which gave them a +6 goal difference. Despite the draw, this result guaranteed their progression to the knockout rounds.

CSD Municipal, meanwhile, finished third in Group D with five points, failing to advance beyond the group stage once again in their third consecutive tournament appearance.

FC Motagua's opening goal came in the 36th minute when Rodrigo De Olivera converted a header after Jesús Bátiz delivered the ball into the box.

Municipal responded in the 76th minute with Erik López heading in a deflected ball to equalize.

Although Municipal dominated possession with 61% and outshot Motagua 21 to 9, the Honduran side generated a higher expected goal value of 1.75 compared to Municipal’s 0.88.

Motagua also recorded the three shots with the highest probability of scoring: Jonathan Moya’s chance at the 90+2 minute mark (0.56 xG), De Olivera’s goal (0.86 xG), and Alejandro Reyes’ effort at 90+5 minutes (0.19 xG), as reported by Concacaf.

Motagua’s advancement marks their fourth consecutive progression past the group stage, making them the only Honduran team to achieve this feat in multiple editions of the tournament.

Cristian Hernández of Municipal became the third Argentine player with the most appearances in the last two editions, playing seven matches, behind Mauro Quiroga with eight and Rodrigo Gómez with eleven, both from other clubs.

Erik López’s goal made him the sixth Paraguayan to score in the last two editions of the competition, joining notable scorers such as Pedro Báez and Mauro Caballero.

In Group D standings, Cartaginés finished first with eight points as well but took the lead over Motagua due to fewer yellow cards accumulated, according to tournament tiebreaker rules.

Municipal’s elimination continues a pattern of early exits in the Concacaf Central American Cup, having failed to pass the group stage since their debut in 2024.
