Michael Jordan Expected to End NBC Role Before 2026-27 Season

Michael Jordan is not expected to return to NBC Sports NBA coverage for the 2026-27 season, according to Front Office Sports, after his role as a special contributor last year ended after limited appearances.

NBC had previously announced Jordan would join the network before the 2025-26 season as a special contributor and would feature a docuseries titled "MJ: Insights To Excellence." The plan included Jordan’s season kickoff with NBC broadcaster Mike Tirico interviewing him.

Front Office Sports reported Wednesday that NBC has declined to comment on the situation, while noting Jordan could change his mind about returning.

Although Jordan’s conversation with Tirico was described as fascinating, Front Office Sports said his appearances were ultimately few and did not focus on the NBA’s current events.

In the 2025-26 season’s NBC coverage, Jordan participated in a single sit-down interview with Tirico. That interview was cut into multiple segments that aired at different points throughout the year.

NBC’s decision to add Jordan came after the league returned to its airwaves for the first time since 2002, following a new broadcast rights deal between NBC and the NBA.

Jordan, now 63, has generally avoided giving frequent league commentary during his time in broadcasting, and the report said he typically has refrained from voicing opinions on the league.

After selling his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets in 2023, Jordan has shifted much of his attention to NASCAR. He is a co-owner of 23XI Racing alongside veteran driver Denny Hamlin.

With the report indicating he is unlikely to return for 2026-27, Jordan’s broadcasting commitments appear set to remain limited compared with the earlier "special contributor" announcement.
