Legendary Country Music Manager Dale Morris Dies at 89

Dale Morris, a pivotal figure in country music known for managing Alabama and Kenny Chesney, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday night at age 89, according to Billboard.com.

Morris began his career as a songwriter, writing Johnny Paycheck’s 1967 hit "Don’t Monkey With Another Monkey’s Monkey." His breakthrough came in 1979 when he started managing Alabama, leading the band to 33 No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.

In the 1990s, Morris guided Kenny Chesney’s rise, helping him become one of country music’s top touring artists and matching Alabama’s record with 33 No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, as reported by pennlive.com and musicrow.com.

Clint Higham, president of Morris Higham Management, expressed the impact of Morris’s life in a statement.

"He lived a big, bold, beautiful, blessed life, and I’m holding onto that right now," Higham said. "It’s the end of an era."

"Dale Morris gave me my first internship, and I never wanted to go anywhere else. He saw things in people, in me, in Kenny, and inspired everyone to reach beyond what we thought possible," Higham said.

Morris also managed artists including Old Dominion, Ricky Van Shelton, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Bobby "Crash" Craddock, contributing broadly to country music’s development.

John Dotson shared on Facebook the personal significance of Morris’s influence.

"Dale Morris was as big an influence in my life as there ever was going back to 1979," Dotson wrote. "I was an eyewitness as he changed the entertainment industry, particularly Nashville, like very few others ever have or will. There is a hole in my heart with his passing rivaled by only my mother’s passing."

Beyond management, Morris built Morris Light & Sound, a staging company known for innovative production, and was inducted into the International Entertainment Buyers Association’s Hall of Fame in 2010, as noted by musicrow.com.

He was married to his wife Earline for 68 years and is survived by family including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be announced later; the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in lieu of flowers.
