Jose Alvarado Joins Puerto Rico for FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in August

Jose Alvarado, guard for the New York Knicks, will represent Puerto Rico in two FIBA World Cup Americas Qualifiers later this month, facing Argentina on August 27 and Uruguay on August 31, according to announcements from Puerto Rico Basketball and reports by Sports Illustrated and heavy.com.

This marks Alvarado's first meaningful basketball competition since winning the 2026 NBA Finals with the Knicks and signing a three-year, $14.4 million extension. The Knicks expect him to play a key bench role in their upcoming title defense campaign.

Alvarado's presence on the court significantly improved the Knicks' performance during the Finals. When he played, the Knicks held a 127.4 offensive rating and a +18.9 net rating, compared to lower marks when he was on the bench, as noted by Max Wildstein of Sports Illustrated.

Despite averaging just 4.2 points per game and shooting 25% from three-point range in the Finals, Alvarado's impact came from energizing the team and facilitating faster play. With Puerto Rico, he will assume a primary offensive role, often playing with teammates who are not NBA professionals.

His participation also serves as a valuable preseason preparation, giving him more on-ball reps and offensive opportunities ahead of the Knicks' training camp, which starts at the end of September. Alvarado has only had about two months of offseason rest after the Knicks' championship run, making this warmup important.

However, there is an inherent risk. Alvarado previously suffered a serious fall playing for Puerto Rico in the 2025 AmeriCup against Argentina, raising concerns about potential injuries during offseason international play. Knicks fans and staff will watch closely, as an injury could affect his availability for the Knicks' season.

In case of injury or absence, the Knicks have backup point guard Tyler Kolek, who filled this role before Alvarado joined the team in February 2026.

Alvarado's teammates and fans have celebrated his key contributions this year. His performance during the Knicks' playoff run, including a critical role in the Game 4 comeback against the San Antonio Spurs, helped end the Knicks' 53-year championship drought.
