John Ternus Assumes Apple CEO Role Ahead of Major September Launch
John Ternus will become Apple's CEO on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook after nearly 15 years at the helm, just days before Apple’s highly anticipated product launch event on September 9 at its Cupertino headquarters.
Ternus faces the challenge of maintaining Apple's market capitalization growth, which soared to $4.5 trillion under Cook’s leadership, representing an increase of roughly $32 million every hour for nearly 15 years, according to Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan.
Apple's market cap rose from approximately $350 billion when Cook took over in 2011, while annual revenue nearly quadrupled to over $400 billion. Cook also led the launch of Apple Watch, AirPods, and Vision Pro headset, solidifying Apple's innovation and customer loyalty.
Tim Cook praised Ternus, stating, "Apple is already so large, profitable, and deeply embedded in its customers' lives that incremental excellence may no longer be enough to redefine the company."
"John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and honor," Cook said, emphasizing the qualities needed to guide Apple in the evolving AI era.
Apple’s September 9 event, branded with the tagline "surprise and shine," will mark Ternus's first major product launch as CEO. The company is expected to unveil new iPhone models, including its first foldable iPhone, alongside Apple Watches and the new Siri AI assistant.
Analysts view the foldable iPhone as a significant expansion of Apple's hardware lineup, potentially boosting its presence in the premium smartphone market dominated by competitors like Samsung.
Bank of America analysts noted, "Ternus could cement Apple’s device dominance in an AI enabled era," highlighting the importance of AI integration in Apple's future offerings.
Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product management, Drew Blackard, commented on the foldable category, saying, "I think the more visibility there is on the category, the better."
John Ternus joined Apple in 2001, rising through the ranks to senior vice president of hardware engineering before his CEO appointment. He has overseen development of key products such as AirPods, Mac, iPad, and iPhone.
Tim Cook will remain at Apple as executive chairman, focusing on policy engagement and regulatory matters.
