John Goodman Lost 200 Pounds Through Diet and Workouts
John Goodman said he lost 200 pounds over the past two decades after changing his eating habits and quitting drinking, starting rehab in 2007, and pairing those decisions with regular workouts ahead of his work on Roseanne spinoff The Conners.
Goodman described his weight change as a shift away from overeating from a formerly 400-pound frame, saying the approach relied on portion control rather than a public example.
He told AARP The Magazine in 2018, "It was basically just portion control, and 'I don’t need it.'" Goodman explained to AARP The Magazine in 2018.
Goodman also linked his success to addressing an emptiness he associated with earlier habits, and he said he stopped trying to fill that feeling with food or alcohol.
Goodman told AARP in 2018, "There was an emptiness inside me." Goodman said to AARP in 2018.
He connected that outlook to sobriety, saying his decision in 2007 followed a long battle with alcoholism that he described as life or death.
Goodman expressed to The Guardian in 2012, "It was 30 years of a disease that was taking its toll on everyone around me and it had got to the point where, every time I did it, it was becoming more and more debilitating. It was life or death." Goodman said to The Guardian in 2012.
Goodman said he later changed how he responded to that feeling by acknowledging it instead of filling it.
Goodman explained to ABC's Peter Travers in 2016, "But instead of filling it with booze or cocaine or food, you just acknowledge that it’s there." Goodman explained to ABC's Peter Travers in 2016.
He described a mirror-and-habit warning, and said he learned to treat the urge to hide from himself as a dangerous point to avoid.
Goodman said to ABC's Peter Travers in 2016, "You're shaving in the mirror and you don't want to look at yourself." Goodman said to ABC's Peter Travers in 2016.
Goodman said he hired health coach Mackie Shilstone to lead workouts six days a week and help cut sugar from his diet.
Goodman said to People in 2010, "It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you're going to eat next." Goodman reasoned to People in 2010.
He described getting started by losing 100 pounds, and said he worked up sweat without going to extremes.
Goodman acknowledged to AARP in 2018, "I was breaking a sweat." Goodman acknowledged to AARP in 2018.
He also contrasted his newer pace with an earlier pattern in which he would lose 60 or 70 pounds in three months and then resume old habits.
Goodman recalled to ABC, "In the old days, I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds." Goodman recalled to ABC.
For his current routine, Goodman described boxing workouts focused on hitting mitts and bags and learning footwork.
Goodman told Rolling Stone in 2023, "It's usually just an hour, hour and a half of hitting the mitts, hitting the bags, learning footwork." Goodman said to Rolling Stone in 2023.
When he did not feel ready to spar, he stayed active by walking his dogs or using an elliptical.
Goodman told AARP, "I've got bionic parts." Goodman joked to AARP.
