Jeff Dean Urges Gen Z to Approach AI with Broad Understanding

Jeff Dean, former head of Google AI, spoke publicly for the first time since leaving Google this month after 27 years, urging Gen Z to engage broadly with AI research rather than mastering every detail.

Dean recommended skimming abstracts of up to 100 AI research papers to connect emerging ideas that have not yet been linked, emphasizing strategic time management and interdisciplinary thinking for tech careers.

He stated, "I often tell students it's better to skim 10 papers than to read one in detail because you then get 10 points in your cloud of what might be possible." He added, "Or, even skim 100 abstracts because what you want to be able to do is connect important ideas that have not yet been connected."

Dean served as Google AI's head from 2018 to 2023 and chief scientist for three years before departing to co-found DiscoveryLoop, an AI startup focused on autonomous research.

On choosing challenges, Dean advised, "The perfect shape of a problem that you want to work on in a reasonably long-term manner [is] like five years or something." He encouraged trying many approaches, acknowledging that some will fail.

Despite warnings from AI pioneers about job displacement and wealth concentration, Dean remains optimistic about AI's societal benefits.

He views AI as a tool that can expand human capability, accelerating medical research, enhancing health services, strengthening education, and aiding in complex technical inquiries.

Dean said, "AI presents incredibly positive use cases. I think that's super exciting."

This contrasts with concerns from Geoffrey Hinton, who warned AI could replace workers and concentrate wealth among technology owners.
