Born Mary Margaret Morgan on December 3, 1931, in Mancos, Colorado, she began her career at age three in her family's vaudeville act before moving to Los Angeles in 1935. She adopted her stage name from banker J.P. Morgan while serving as high school treasurer, according to BroadwayWorld.

Morgan established herself as a popular vocalist in the 1950s after being discovered by bandleader Frank DeVol in 1950. Signing with RCA in 1954, she scored major hits with That's All I Want from You, Danger, Heartbreak Ahead, and The Longest Walk. Her television career expanded rapidly, leading to her own series, The Jaye P. Morgan Show, in 1956.
