How to Fish, a quirky physics-based fishing game developed by Dazed Games, sold more than 1 million copies within two days of its August 20, 2026 launch on Steam, quickly rising to the top of the platform's global sales chart, according to Dazed Games and Steam data.

The game reached a peak of 268,101 concurrent players on Steam within four days, a figure that notably surpasses some high-budget AAA titles, data from SteamDB confirmed on August 23, 2026.

How to Fish offers a cooperative experience for one to four players stranded on a remote island, where they must catch, kill, and sell fish using a variety of weapons to upgrade their boat and progress through increasingly challenging islands.

"1 MILLION FISHERMEN IN 2 DAYS?!?!1? WE HIT 1 MILLION FISHERMEN! THANK YOU ALL!

Yes, we’ll be adding more content! Yes, we’ll be fixing bugs! Best, Carl-Vilhelm & Melvin," said Carl-Vilhelm Johansson and Melvin Olsson, co-founders of Dazed Games.

The game has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with nearly 13,642 reviews on Steam and a 94.32% positive rating, despite some technical issues mentioned in minority negative feedback.

Gameplay involves players starting with simple fishing rods and progressing to use more powerful weapons like SMGs and dynamite, while facing boss encounters such as giant sharks and fast pufferfish that require cooperative combat strategies.

"The central dramatic question is not whether they will survive — the island has fish, after all — but whether they can catch, kill, sell, and gamble their way through a chain of progressively stranger islands before the escalating absurdity outpaces their ability to keep up," described VGTimes in launch coverage.

How to Fish's unique appeal comes from its physics-based mechanics, which generate unpredictable, humorous moments that players frequently share on social media, a design philosophy championed by Landfall Games, the publisher and investor behind the game.

Landfall's CEO Kirsten-Lee Naidoo explained the company's funding model as "very hands off," providing up to $1 million to select indie games without taking intellectual property rights or creative control.

The game is currently available on PC via Steam with a launch discount of $4.95 until August 28, after which its price will return to $7.99, and a console release, including PlayStation 5, has been announced for the future without a confirmed timeline.

Dazed Games advises players to follow official channels for updates on new content and bug fixes as the game continues to evolve post-launch.
