Himalayan Flash Flood Kills Over 160 Near Nepal Tibet Border

A catastrophic flash flood and massive mudslide swept across the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday, killing at least 160 people and leaving hundreds more missing, including foreign tourists and rescue personnel. A wall of mud and rock collapsed into a border river, causing massive water surges that destroyed homes, swept away vehicles, and wiped out entire border land crossings, markets, and local villages on both sides of the frontier. Nepali police confirmed the recovery of 157 bodies on their side of the border, while emergency authorities warned that the total death toll could rise significantly higher as search efforts continue in hard-hit areas.

Chinese state media reported three fatalities and another 265 people missing in Tibet after a mudslide buried the border hub of Gyirong County, prompting the dispatch of emergency workers, speed boats, and sniffer dogs.

Surveillance video from the Chinese border side captured a wall of mud and debris crashing over a multi-story building, sweeping away parked buses and cars while dozens of people fled the surging waters. The Nepal tourism ministry stated that at least 403 tourists were unaccounted for following the deluge, including 341 foreign citizens from India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, South Korea, and other nations.

The missing foreign nationals included 142 Indian pilgrims traveling toward Mount Kailash in Tibet, prompting authorities in neighboring India to place two northern states on high alert as floodwaters moved downstream toward the Indian border. At least 28 Nepal police officers are also among the missing, according to a police spokesperson, while the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies dispatched emergency relief supplies to the region.

Initial reports suggested an earthquake caused the collapse of a lower glacial structure, though the US Geological Survey later indicated that the recorded 5.2-magnitude seismic event was actually caused by the massive glacial rock collapse itself. Officials and environmental experts warned that a remaining blockage upstream on the border river poses a ongoing threat of triggering a secondary flash flood downstream. Chinese leader Xi Jinping stated that the most urgent task is doing everything possible to search for and rescue the missing people, as state broadcaster CCTV reported emergency teams mobilizing across the border zone.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced that UN field teams and partner organizations are actively mobilizing personnel and emergency supplies within Nepal to assist affected local communities.
