Hawk Fire Reaches 85 Percent Containment After Burning Over 15,000 Acres

The Hawk Fire in Nevada has burned approximately 15,067 acres and is now 85% contained, according to fire officials as of Tuesday afternoon. Fire crews have assigned 586 personnel to contain the blaze, which has destroyed 47 homes and one commercial building, while damaging eight other residences, the Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue reported. Evacuation orders on the east side of US Highway 395 have been downgraded to warnings, allowing 9,300 residents to return home, though about 5,000 people remain under evacuation orders, according to local authorities.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the fire, assessing community tips to determine whether the blaze was accidental or intentional.

The wildfire exhibited extreme behavior during its initial spread, moving approximately four miles within three hours and impacting critical infrastructure including a railway line and a communication tower, the Bureau of Land Management Nevada said. Despite progress, officials caution that weather conditions pose ongoing challenges, with strong winds forecast in the coming days that could threaten containment lines and spark new fire activity.

Several road closures remain in place, including Red Rock Drive at Silver Lake Road, Resource Drive at Moya Boulevard, and key sections of North Virginia Street, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office stated. Authorities urge residents to stay alert to emergency updates and be prepared for potential evacuation if the fire shifts due to wind changes.
