Gotham FC and Angel City FC Draw 0-0 as Lavelle Exits with Head Injury

Gotham FC and Angel City FC played to a scoreless draw at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 23, 2026, with Gotham midfielder Rose Lavelle leaving the game due to a head injury.

The match ended 0-0 after Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson saved a penalty kick by Gotham's Guro Reiten in the 82nd minute, preserving the clean sheet for Angel City.

Angelina Anderson made four saves in total, earning her sixth shutout of the season, while Gotham's Ann-Katrin Berger recorded three saves for her 10th clean sheet. Gotham remains unbeaten in nine games.

Rose Lavelle was forced to exit the match in the 37th minute after hitting her head following a collision. She was assessed on the field for several minutes before leaving the game under concussion protocol and being replaced by Mandy Freeman.

"It's not ideal when players go down early in the game, and obviously, Rose is a key part of our team," interim coach Shaun Harris said. "At the same time, everyone knows the roles and responsibility of each position, and we have players be able to step in and fill that role. Obviously, it's not ideal, but at the same time, we have people to fill in and move certain stuff around, and I thought we coped with it quite well."

Lavelle, a U.S. women’s national team midfielder who joined Gotham in January 2024, scored the winning goal in the 2025 NWSL Championship and has four goals this season. She is currently being evaluated for a head injury.

Throughout the 96-minute match, Gotham controlled most possession but could not convert opportunities into goals. Their best chance came with the late penalty awarded after Angel City defender Sarah Gorden handled the ball, but Anderson's save kept the score level.

Gotham FC leads the NWSL standings by seven points over the second-place Washington Spirit, while Angel City sits tenth after a string of draws.
