ESPN Restores RailCam and Upgrades Broadcast Tech for LLWS 2026
ESPN has brought back its high-speed RailCam system to Howard J. Lamade Stadium and upgraded overall camera capabilities across both tournament venues during the 2026 Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on August 26, 2026.
The network deployed more than 60 cameras and 16 12-channel EVS replay machines across the complex, utilizing a full onsite studio presence supported by three Game Creek Video ST 2110 production trucks connected by eight miles of fiber-optic cabling.
Situated behind the outfield wall on the U.S. side of the bracket, the RailCam operates on a 100-foot track using a Sony HDC-P50 camera capturing images in 3X super-slow-motion to track outfield plays, home runs, and fan reactions.
"We are very excited to bring back the RailCam system to Lamade after not having it for several years," said Meg Aronowitz, SVP of production at ESPN. "The movement of that camera is providing incredible coverage of plays in the outfield, home runs, and the overall beauty of the venue."
To ensure proper positioning, production teams calibrated the height of the apparatus behind the graded outfield wall to avoid obstructing game views while concealing the machinery.
"Due to the height of the outfield wall and the elevated graded area just behind it, we needed to make sure we could establish a camera angle high enough to get over the top of the outfield wall while remaining low enough to avoid any game-related visual concerns and conceal the system as much as possible," explained Paul Horrell, manager of remote operations at ESPN. "Our Fletcher team was able to work with our Little League partners and come up with solutions to make it happen."
The venue also features a 4DReplay matrix setup comprising 50 Panasonic 4K cameras arrayed along a 200-degree arc behind home plate, which delivers multi-angle swing breakdowns in under five seconds.
"As we continue to move more content to HDR, particularly over this last year, it has been a great opportunity for the company and vendors as well to identify and work through the technical challenges associated with HDR, particularly with conversions and integrations with other broadcast partners," noted Horrell. "Given that all productions are being handled fully onsite in a shared compound and format for the LLWS, the HDR component becomes a more straightforward lift."
To match production standards across both fields, ESPN upgraded Volunteer Stadium with matching robotic setups, a right-field position for its jib camera, a high-frame-rate left-field camera, and an RF handheld unit.
"We have made a significant effort to enhance the camera complement at Volunteer Stadium to match the level of play on the field," stated Aronowitz. "Both stadiums now feature very similar hard-camera, robotic-camera, and handheld-camera complements. We were able to move the jib camera to right field and add a high-frame-rate hard camera in left field, enhancing outfield coverage throughout the stadium."
Audio capture at Volunteer Stadium was streamlined by installing two Shure DCA901 Broadcast Microphone Arrays, which replaced multiple field lavalier mics with up to eight isolated channels controlled via a single Dante cable connection.
All graphics processing and remote file editing from Creative Mobile Solutions Inc. remain centered in the local compound, with only two replay operators managing feeds remotely from Bristol, Connecticut.
"These mobile units come with tremendous horsepower and efficiency for handling the needs and feeds-management of a multi-production event of this scope and size," added Horrell. "As part of those efficiencies and infrastructure, they afford each production easy access to program feeds and desired selected isos from the other two production locations as well as general shared scenic sources."
