Dolmio Revives Iconic Puppet Family in Successful 40th Anniversary Campaign
Dolmio has successfully reintroduced its iconic puppet family in a new advertising campaign marking the brand’s 40th anniversary, achieving a 4.9-Star rating in effectiveness tests by System1, placing it in the top 4% of ads in its category, according to System1.
The campaign’s score significantly surpasses the category average of 3.3 stars and features an "Exceptional" Spike Rating of 1.35, indicating strong potential for short-term sales impact as well as long-term brand growth.
The campaign, created by T&P, brings back the characters Papa, Mama, Sophia, Carlo, Nina, and Nico alongside the familiar "When’s Your Dolmio Day?" line. It is part of Dolmio’s largest marketing effort in over a decade, spanning multiple media including TV, video-on-demand, social media, influencer activity, and outdoor advertising.
Andrew Tindall, chief growth officer – advertising at System1, said, "Dolmio didn't need reinventing, it needed remembering. Bringing the family back is a deliberate bet on culture over category noise. You'll see them everywhere: life size on the street, loud and colourful on outdoor, consistent across social and TV. No hard sell, just the characters doing what they've always done best."
System1 highlighted that Dolmio’s success stems from reviving familiar brand characters rather than creating a new creative identity. This approach leverages the proven effectiveness of long-standing brand characters in advertising.
Research by System1 and Effie Worldwide supports this, showing campaigns with brand characters are twice as likely to report profit growth or market share gain compared to those without. These characters help brands maintain consistency, building distinctive assets in consumers’ memories over time.
These campaigns also have a 50% higher chance of gaining differentiation and are on average 26% more emotional. Additionally, campaigns with brand characters are three times more likely to enhance brand distinctiveness.
Dolmio’s family characters fulfill these roles by providing a recognizable personality and entertaining storytelling that does not rely on direct product selling, contributing to the advert’s strong effectiveness scores.
