CIA Director John Ratcliffe Makes Unannounced Visit to Moscow

Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe completed an unannounced trip to Moscow, according to US media reports on Tuesday. Flight tracking data confirmed an American military transport aircraft traveled to the Russian capital, where officials subsequently spotted a US diplomatic motorcade.

Flightradar24 tracking records revealed that a US military C-17 Globemaster III departed from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The transport aircraft made a stop in Latvia before proceeding directly to Moscow.

The unannounced diplomatic mission coincides with a period where US-mediated negotiations to end Russia's military invasion of Ukraine have reached a standstill. Reports from the Financial Times indicated that the Trump administration requested Ukrainian forces to temporarily cease long-range strikes against major Russian cities while the CIA director remained in the country.

While official intelligence representatives have not released a statement regarding the primary purpose of the mission, the agency previously served as a mediator for high-profile diplomatic exchanges. The CIA formerly facilitated the 2024 prisoner swap that secured the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan, as well as a separate exchange earlier this month involving a detained former US Marine.

The visit also occurs amid heightened geopolitical tension surrounding Iran following new economic sanction strategies announced by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to further isolate Tehran.
