Chivas to Play America in Oakland Friendly This October

Mexican soccer powerhouses Guadalajara and Club America will face off in an international friendly edition of El Clasico de Mexico on October 4 at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum in California, representatives announced August 25.

The match falls during the October FIFA international window, when the Mexican national team is scheduled to play a friendly against the United States. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Central Mexico time at the Bay Area venue.

The fixture marks Chivas' return to Oakland after nearly 29 years. The Guadalajara side last played at the Coliseum in 1997, securing a 3-2 victory over their opponents at the venue.

Organizers planned a fan festival featuring live music, food, club trophies, and former team legends ahead of the match. Organizers aim to build on the matchup's domestic popularity, following a 2023 friendly at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena that drew 86,134 spectators.

The exhibition follows a domestic league clash between the two rivals set for September 19 at Estadio Banorte in Liga MX action. Head coach Gabriel Milito holds a winning record in recent rivalry matches, following 1-0 victories in the Apertura 2025 and Clausura 2026 tournaments.

Guadalajara enters the matchup featuring the highest-valued squad in Mexican soccer for the current period, following recent league victories over Santos Laguna and Tijuana. America currently leads the Liga MX standings, holding a three-point advantage over fourth-place Chivas while remaining undefeated and advancing to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals.
