Chelsea Sign Maxence Lacroix for £52 Million Ahead of Premier League Opener

French defender Maxence Lacroix completed a £52 million transfer to Chelsea from Crystal Palace on July 30, 2026, signing a six-year contract running through 2032 ahead of Monday's Premier League opener against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The 26-year-old centre-back, who arrived following a semi-final run with France at the summer FIFA World Cup, made his unofficial debut in Chelsea's pre-season victory over Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge as manager Xabi Alonso prepares for his first competitive match in charge.

Lacroix reflected on his initial appearance for the club and expressed his eagerness to begin the new campaign in West London.

"Of course, I know all about London derbies and Fulham. I knew them also with Palace, but I know that now with Chelsea, with this big club, it's also totally different, and I'm looking forward to all these derbies," said Lacroix, Chelsea defender.

The centre-back also addressed the tactical flexibility required by manager Xabi Alonso, who has tested both three-man and four-man defensive systems during pre-season training.

"I’ve settled in well, it’s been really good working with the manager and the other players," said Lacroix, Chelsea defender.

Lacroix brought significant tactical adaptability to the Blues, having operated across multiple tactical setups throughout his career in Germany, England, and at the international level.

"It’s really good. All the guys are good and it’s been top training with them every day," said Lacroix, Chelsea defender.

The defender highlighted his familiarity with various defensive formations prior to joining Chelsea's squad.

"I've played back three and I've played back four at Wolfsburg, at Palace and also in the national team. So for me it's all right for both tactics," said Lacroix, Chelsea defender.

Understanding positional demands remains a core priority for the defender as he adjusts to Alonso's tactical philosophy.

"I think it’s important for any player to be able to play different ways. And also to understand how we want to play, that is always important for me," said Lacroix, Chelsea defender.

"The big message for the fans is that it's going to be a beautiful season and we need you with us so we can enjoy it together," said Lacroix, Chelsea defender.
