Cindy Brunson Accuses Caitlin Clark of Stat Padding in Fever Victory

Former Phoenix Mercury announcer Cindy Brunson accused Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark of stat padding after Clark scored 37 points in a blowout victory against the Chicago Sky on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Clark poured in 19 of her 37 points during the second half to help Indiana pull away. With 2:57 remaining in the contest, she hit her career-high eighth 3-pointer to extend the Fever lead to 16 points, ultimately exiting the game with 1:06 left on the clock.

Brunson took to social media to criticize the star guard's extended minutes during the late stages of the game, contrasting Clark's performance with a 32-point outing by Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers.

"Miss me with that stat padding 37 points, on the floor up 20 w/ a minute. The 32 points in just 26 minutes was WAY more impressive from the ⭐️ on the playoff team from the lone star state," posted Brunson on Threads.

Despite the criticism, Indiana maintained its starting lineup into the final minutes to prevent a late comeback from Chicago. Clark's second-half scoring run proved decisive after the Sky tied the game at 58-58 in the third quarter.

Prior to the contest, Clark expressed complete confidence in her ability to deliver a dominant scoring performance following a tough road stretch of three games in four days.

"Before the game started, you can ask coach Steph," said Clark. "I said, 'It's gonna be one of those nights.'"

The victory gave Indiana crucial momentum as the team prepares for a five-day break ahead of their upcoming home game against Connecticut.

"I think I just got some really good sleep at the hotel last night from 3 am to 11 am, so I got nice hours, woke up, watched some film, went through the scout and came to play," stated Clark.

The Fever will play Connecticut at home on Friday before players disperse for the FIBA World Cup break.
